Udyam MSME registrations (Ministry of MSME)
A count on one day and an undercount: it misses registration days, so never set it against the ministry's own totals or against a survey's count of enterprises.

Geographic AreaDefinition and comparison
The geographic area of the place, in square kilometres, as published by the government rather than computed from a boundary file. Census 2011 table A-1 is the source at every grain from the country down to the sub-district; the workbook's own note 2 says the state and district figures are supplied by SURVEY OF INDIA and the sub-district figures are DERIVED BY ORGI THROUGH DIGITISATION, so the two grains have different pedigrees and every fact row carries which one it is in quality_note. AREA INCLUDES TERRITORY UNDER FOREIGN OCCUPATION wherever the census says so -- India's total carries 78,114 km2 held by Pakistan, 5,180 km2 ceded by Pakistan to China and 37,555 km2 held by China -- which is why it is NOT the denominator the census uses for its own published density. Total is not always Rural + Urban: Arunachal Pradesh publishes no rural/urban area at all, and 23,477.34 km2 of Kachchh (the Rann) lies under no sub-district. Never a cropped, forested or built-up area.
Population growth, annualised since the previous censusDefinition and comparison
Compound annual growth rate of the census population between this census and the PREVIOUS CENSUS THAT HAS A FIGURE FOR THIS DISTRICT, expressed as percent per year and filed under the later year. Annualised rather than published as a decadal change on purpose: three district-years have no census (Assam 1981, J&K 1991, Senapati 2001), so the following reading spans twenty years there and a decadal-change column would put a 20-year change beside 10-year ones in the same choropleth. Every cell here is per year. Derived from census_population, so it inherits its boundaries and its gaps, and the first census a district has (usually 1901) carries no value because there is nothing to compare against.
Population (census count)Definition and comparison
Population enumerated by the Census of India, table A-2 (decadal variation in population since 1901). Twelve censuses, 1901 to 2011, for the district AS CONSTITUTED IN 2011: the Registrar General restates every earlier count onto 2011 boundaries, so a district created in 1991 still carries a 1901 figure for the territory it now covers. An enumeration, not an estimate or a projection. Three district-years are absent because no census was taken: Assam 1981, Jammu & Kashmir 1991, and Senapati (Manipur) 2001, whose three sub-divisions had their results cancelled. Those must read 'not enumerated' and never zero. State figures are the census's own state rows, so they are on the state as it stood at that census; Telangana, created in 2014, has no series before 2011.
Females per 1,000 males as enumerated, computed from the male and female counts published in Census table A-2 for the same district-year as census_population. The census's own convention, females per thousand males, NOT the inverse used by some international sources. Same 2011-boundary restatement and the same three unenumerated district-years as census_population.
People per square kilometre of geographic area: population divided by area_km2 at the same place, period and area cut. GRAIN-INVARIANT (doctrine 6) -- the old text named one file and one grain (census_states_2011.csv, the state layer) and that was a description of a load, not of the number. Source 1 publishes it for 36 states/UTs at 2011; everywhere else it is computed as inf.inferred_fact method ratio_within_place from the two published terms, so a reader can always tell which it is. ⚠️ The census's OWN "Population per sq. km." column in table A-1 is deliberately NOT loaded under this id: its denominator EXCLUDES the illegally occupied portion of Jammu & Kashmir while the published area INCLUDES it (India reads 382 against 368.3, J&K 124 against 56.4), so it is a different quotient. It is staged whole in ing.census_a01_area and promoting it is an owner ruling, not an ingest.
1000 * Female / Male. Site publishes Math.round of this value. State-level values are recomputed from district-sum rollups (counts add, rates recomputed) and may differ from the state-published figure (see gender_ratio).

Sex ratio at birth, births in the last 5 yearsDefinition and comparison
NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork, phase-split: phase-1 units surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 units 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. 5-year birth-recall window. Never compare to the census child sex ratio (0-6), different construct.
Sex ratio of the surveyed household populationDefinition and comparison
NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork, phase-split: phase-1 units surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 units 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. Survey household population, small n. NOT comparable to the census 2011 sex ratio on the site (different universe and precision); if both shown, label sources loudly.
Breastfed children 6-23 months receiving an adequate dietDefinition and comparison
NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork, phase-split: phase-1 units surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 units 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. fn 17 (long IYCF rule, link, don't paraphrase). Values near zero are common and real.
Non-breastfed children 6-23 months receiving an adequate dietDefinition and comparison
NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork, phase-split: phase-1 units surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 units 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. fn 17; tiny base, the most-suppressed indicator in the file alongside 69.

NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork, phase-split: phase-1 units surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 units 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. fn 22: altitude-adjusted, CAPILLARY blood, official footnote blocks comparison with venous-blood surveys (CNNS, clinical data); the NFHS-4 to NFHS-5 jump is officially printed but publicly disputed as measurement-inflated. Trend publishable as-officially-reported WITH the capillary caveat.
Men 15-49 who are anaemic (<13.0 g/dl)Definition and comparison
NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork; phase-1 states surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 states 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. fn 22: altitude- and smoking-adjusted, CAPILLARY blood -- the official footnote blocks comparison with venous-blood surveys. DIFFERENT cut-off from women (13.0 g/dl for men vs 12.0 non-pregnant / 11.0 pregnant): a male-female 'anaemia gap' computed from these two numbers is comparing different thresholds and must be labelled as such.
All women 15-19 who are anaemicDefinition and comparison
NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork, phase-split: phase-1 units surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 units 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. Adolescent subset of the all-women composite; same mixed cut-offs and capillary caveat.
Difference from group median: 18.4 percentage points

NFHS-5 survey estimate (2019-21 fieldwork, phase-split: phase-1 units surveyed 2019-20, phase-2 units 2019-21), never a count or enumeration. Different cut-off (11.0) than non-pregnant (12.0); tiny base, often suppressed. Capillary caveat applies.

Difference from group median: -18.8 percentage points
Share of gross cropped area sown to cerealsDefinition and comparison
APY administrative crop statistics (Directorate of Economics & Statistics, DA&FW), compiled from state reporting, an estimate of record, not a sample survey and not a satellite measurement. Aggregated from the source's crop x season rows for the district, excluding its 'Total' subtotal rows. Area sown to crops the source classifies 'Cereals' as a percentage of gross cropped area. A share of AREA, not of output or of value.

Distinct crops the source reports for this districtDefinition and comparison
APY administrative crop statistics (Directorate of Economics & Statistics, DA&FW), compiled from state reporting, an estimate of record, not a sample survey and not a satellite measurement. Aggregated from the source's crop x season rows for the district, excluding its 'Total' subtotal rows. A count of the source's REPORTING DEPTH, not of agricultural diversity: it says how many crops this district's return itemises, and it is the denominator context for every share above. The median district reports 20; a district reporting three has a return that is incomplete, not a monoculture.

Denominator switch: share of private-facility births, NOT a decomposition of the all-births c-section rate; charting 46-48 as siblings without saying so misleads.
Difference from group median: 44.2 percentage points
C-sections among births in PUBLIC facilities (5 yrs)Definition and comparison

Gross cropped area (area sown, counting each season separately)Definition and comparison
APY administrative crop statistics (Directorate of Economics & Statistics, DA&FW), compiled from state reporting, an estimate of record, not a sample survey and not a satellite measurement. Aggregated from the source's crop x season rows for the district, excluding its 'Total' subtotal rows. Sum of the area sown to every crop in every season. A field cropped twice in the year is counted twice, so this is GROSS cropped area and not net sown area, and it is not the district's land area, a double-cropped district can exceed its own geographic area. Must never be shortened to 'cropped area' or compared with a land-area figure.
Households with electricityDefinition and comparison
NFHS-4 (2015-16) factsheet construct, a survey estimate and never a count. HOUSEHOLD denominator. The NFHS-4 factsheet reports this amenity per household; NFHS-5 reports the population living in such households.

Households using an improved, unshared sanitation facilityDefinition and comparison
NFHS-4 (2015-16) factsheet construct, a survey estimate and never a count. HOUSEHOLD denominator. Improved facility not shared with any other household; the factsheet footnote itself warns this does not denote complete access to a toilet facility, and that sentence travels with the number.
Households with an improved drinking-water sourceDefinition and comparison
NFHS-4 (2015-16) factsheet construct, a survey estimate and never a count. HOUSEHOLD denominator. The improved set is the NFHS-4 footnote's; NFHS-5 widened it (piped to neighbour, community RO plant).

Urban share of populationDefinition and comparison
100 * urban population / total population, from the Census 2011 Primary Census Abstract's own Urban and Total rows for the district (ing.census2011_pca, TOT_P). This is the census's published urban share of population, India 31.14%, Goa 62.17%. It replaced 100 * Urban_Households / Households on 2026-09-01, which was the urban share of CENSUS HOUSES (330,835,767 structures, not 246,692,667 households) shipped under a '% of households' label. State values are the district sums of the same two counts, recomputed.
MGNREGA average wage rate paid per person-dayDefinition and comparison
Administrative return of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MoRD), reported by the district and published monthly as a FINANCIAL-YEAR-TO-DATE figure: the value against a month is the position at the end of that month, cumulative from 1 April, not that month's own flow. The average wage actually paid per person-day of unskilled work so far this financial year. It is neither the notified state wage rate nor a household's daily income, and it moves with the mix of work as well as with the rate.
MGNREGA average days of employment per household (financial year to date)Definition and comparison
Days of employment provided so far this financial year per household that worked. The denominator is households that WORKED, not households holding a job card and not all rural households, so it does not fall when demand goes unmet. Read against the scheme's 100-day entitlement only at year end: a mid-year figure is a part-year figure and is low by construction.
MGNREGA households that worked (financial year to date)Definition and comparison
Distinct households that have been provided at least one day of employment so far this financial year. A household is counted once however many days it worked, and unmet demand is invisible here, this counts work given, never work sought.
MGNREGA person-days generated (financial year to date)Definition and comparison
Administrative return of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MoRD), reported by the district and published monthly as a FINANCIAL-YEAR-TO-DATE figure: the value against a month is the position at the end of that month, cumulative from 1 April, not that month's own flow. Person-days of unskilled manual employment provided under the CENTRAL liability so far this financial year; days borne by a state's own liability are outside this count. A person-day is one person employed for one day, so this is a volume of work and not a headcount.
MGNREGA unskilled wages paid (financial year to date)Definition and comparison
Administrative return of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MoRD), reported by the district and published monthly as a FINANCIAL-YEAR-TO-DATE figure: the value against a month is the position at the end of that month, cumulative from 1 April, not that month's own flow. Unskilled wage expenditure so far this financial year, in lakh rupees as published. It excludes material and skilled wages and excludes administrative expenditure, so it is smaller than total scheme expenditure and must never be labelled as it. Nominal rupees of the financial year, never deflated.
MGNREGA person-days worked by women (financial year to date)Definition and comparison
Person-days of employment taken up by women so far this financial year, as published. It is deliberately held as a COUNT and not as a share: the source publishes this beside a person-days figure restricted to the central liability, and it has not been established that the two carry the same denominator, so a percentage computed from the pair would be a ratio of two things that may not divide.
MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal (open-data extract)Definition and comparison
Administrative register of the Udyam Registration portal (Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), read from the data.gov.in open-data extract as an AS-OF SNAPSHOT taken on 2026-08-04: one row per registered enterprise, aggregated by us to the district of the enterprise's own registered address. Registration is SELF-DECLARED and free, and since 2021 it is required to access most MSME schemes, so a rise here is a rise in registrations and not necessarily a rise in enterprises. The count is of DISTINCT registration certificates in the extract: 6.60% of the extract's rows repeat another row of the same district exactly (same pincode, date, name, address and activity list) and are counted once, because the repeats are an artefact of the pull's offset paging (99.9% of duplicate groups span more than one page) and the scheme allows an enterprise only one registration. IT IS A LOWER BOUND, NOT THE REGISTER'S SIZE: the extract carries no rows at all for 75 calendar days of 2024 and 106 of 2025, so every enterprise that registered on one of those days is missing from this count, and it must never be quoted against the ministry's own published registration totals. It is a STOCK observed once and cannot be reconstructed by adding the yearly registration counts. It counts REGISTRATIONS, not enterprises in existence, India's unregistered informal enterprises, which every survey puts in the tens of millions, are invisible here by construction.
New Udyam MSME registrations in the yearDefinition and comparison

Certificates whose registration date falls in the named CALENDAR year. PUBLISHED ONLY FOR THE YEARS THE EXTRACT COVERS: a year appears only if the corpus holds rows for at least 98% of that year's days across the whole of India, which admits 2020-2023 (2, 3, 7 and 0 missing days) and refuses 2024 (75 missing days) and 2025 (106), a chart of those two years shows a collapse that is an artefact of the extract and not a fall in registration. The snapshot's own year is never published. Two consequences of reading a live register are part of the definition: registrations later cancelled are missing from their own year, so an older year's count is a survivor count and drifts DOWNWARD with every re-pull; and the portal opened on 1 July 2020, so 2020 is a calendar year in which the scheme existed for six months.
Female literacy rate, age 7 and overDefinition and comparison
Female literates divided by the female population aged 7 and over, the census's own literacy universe on the female half. The all-ages series this key used to carry is `female_literacy_all_ages`.
Literate share of all womenDefinition and comparison
100 * Female_Literate / Female, all ages, infants included. The all-ages twin of `female_literacy`, which migration 123 moved onto the census's age 7+ universe. Median gap between the two over 640 districts: 8.43 points.
47.4% of females
2011
Inferred, not a directly published observation; excluded from comparisons.
Literacy gap, men over women, age 7 and overDefinition and comparison
Male literacy rate minus female literacy rate, in percentage POINTS, both halves on the census's age 7+ universe. Not a percentage and never formatted with a % sign. The all-ages version is `literacy_gap_all_ages`.
Literacy gender gap, all agesDefinition and comparison
Male literacy % minus female literacy %, each first rounded to 2 dp (the intermediate rounding is part of the published definition), both halves on the ALL-AGES denominator. Median gap against the age 7+ version over 640 districts: 2.57 points.
Literacy rate, age 7 and overDefinition and comparison
People who can read and write as a percentage of the population aged seven and above. Children under seven are excluded. These census readings are presented on 2011 district boundaries. This is different from the literate share of the whole population, which includes young children in its denominator.
Literate share of the whole populationDefinition and comparison
People who can read and write as a percentage of the whole population, including children under seven. This is not the official Census literacy rate, which uses only people aged seven and above. The two percentages have different denominators and must not be compared as the same measure.

Every census back to 1901 is restated onto the districts as they stood in 2011, so an early figure counts the ground the district now covers, not a district of that name.
A head count, not a density. The darkest districts are the biggest and most crowded ones, so this is a map of where people are. For growth, read the annual growth rate.
A blank year means no census was taken there. That is not a zero and not a gap in our data: only 1971 and 2011 counted every district.
